Petros, Tennessee, Part 1
This is Petros, Tennessee. Just to the right of where we are standing, the
movie crew constructed a small Olga #1 tipple. (The tipple was torn down
after the filming was completed.) You'll remember scenes from the movie
where miners are walking along this street (towards us) carrying their lunch
pails as they head for the tipple. The first house on the right side of
the road (this is Main Street) was where the exterior shots of Homer's house
were filmed.
This is a close up of Homer's house. A white picket fence was constructed
by the movie crew all the way around the house. Little remains of the
fence today (2006), eight years after the filming.
Homer's house. The night scene where Homer and the others saw Sputnik fly
overhead was filmed in the front yard of this home. You can see a tiny
portion of the white picket fence on the left side at the back of the house.
Homer's house. Remember, only the exterior shots of the house were filmed
here. The interior shots were filmed in Petros, Tennessee.
This is the house just east of Homer's house. It can be seen in some movie
shots.
Homer's house and the house next door.
This is the Petros Baptist Church. The film crew set up Homer's bedroom in
the basement of this church, and that's where the bedroom scenes were filmed.
Looking down Main Street. You can see Homer's house on the right and the
Petros Baptist church on the left. Right behind us on our right side was
where the film crew constructed the Olga #1 tipple.
This is the lot where Olga #1 tipple was constructed. Of course, the tipple was removed when the filming was over.
Some of the buildings on Main Street were also painted with "Olga Coal Company,"
and they still remain that way today.
